Special Duty Screening

Special duty is work that involves tasks that are not usually accomplished or expected of employees.  Because the demands of such duty are different and not routine, assuring performance reliability requires consideration of the employee's suitability to perform the special job elements.

This process must combine the results of both psychological assessment (relevant to the new duties) and evaluation of the officer's behavior on the job. Selection also addresses the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) required for the special assignment. As with entry selection, the decision for specialized duty should be based on psychological as well as other relevant factors. Considering that many KSA's are not suitably measured by pencil and paper tests, the Department's overall evaluation of work performance, training and other demonstrated qualities are critical to effective special duty selection. Psychological suitability is just one component.

Special Psychological Services Group provides Special Duty Selection services in the following areas:
  • Child Exploitation
  • SWAT
  • Hostage Negotiator
  • EOD
  • Fire Marshal
